January: Gvt Elections -  Ousmane rejects the MNSD prime minister, and Ousmane's nominee dismissed from MNSD.  Ultimately, Amadou was re-appointed prime minister.

Problems between prime minister and the president. President does not  acknowledge the prime minister's replacements of heads to the state enterprises. "no confidence" in the Amadou government was defeated in October
Fighting between the Presidents supporters  and prime minister supporters.
December: Teachers, civil servants and university students strikes, demanding salary arrears.

Sept: Prime Minister Issoufou resigns. f "no confidence" vote  in the new government headed by Prime Minister Abdoulaye results in president's dissolution of the National Assembly.

Mahamane Ousmane becomes President,  recover from the economic crisis delayed by unrest caused by the government's inability to pay its employees.

Sept: Government announced pay cuts of 25 %. Settling with the public sector employees, the situation is worsened with the devaluation of the CFA franc by 50% (nullifying compensation to the public sector employees)
Police clash with citizens resulting in the death of one student. Strikes and violent protests persisted for several months.

President: Seyni Kountche, (a Hausa), & military advisors ruled the country  Kountche installs 12 man military government.  predominantly civilian government formed.
Under Kountche, Niger built an extensive laterite and tar road system linking each side of the vast county, west to east to the north.

In 1974,devastating drought &  rampant government corruption resulted in a military coup overthrowing Diori regime. Two million people were starving. 200,000 tons of  food from US and other countries, ended famine conditions by December.
