From MGySgt Richard Carlisle: Detachment had to postpone our MC Ball because of the Tokyo Summit/President Reagan visit (He arrived on 10Nov83)  The Secret Service agents who were predominantly former Marine officers told the President that it was too bad that the Marines had to postpone their ball because of his visit.  Believe it or not, the President was not happy about the situation, so he hosted a special cake cutting ceremony in honor of the birthday of the Corps.   Also, the Tokyo Det was awarded the most outstanding Detachment in "C" Co for 1983.  This is the first time in "C" Co that a large Det won that award.  Also, Sgt Carnell Luckett goes on to be commissioned and is a LtCol of Marines; Sgt Brian Hibbets is a SgtMaj of Marines; Cpl Chuck Millette is a Chief Warrent Oficer of Marines; all  as of 2009: Sgt Armstrong a GySgt.

The Allied Occupation of Japan ends.

From Gordon Britten;  "T/O was NCOIC and nine watchstanders.  With the exception of the NCOIC, we all stood watch in pairs. We stood watch in civilian clothing.  While at the Mitsubushi Shoji building, one guard was at a fixed post while the other guard roamed thefloors, checking for unlocked safes, vaults and unsecured classified material.  It was quite a scramble toget to all floors before housekeeping came through.  After we moved from there, we were assigned to the Chancery and Montetsu Building.  The chancery was located where the new Embassy Building is now located.  The Montetsu was approximately two and a half blocks away, we were able to secure the entrances to both buildings and then each guard to these buildings were able to pull security checks out.  The Montetsu was owned outright by the State Dept (Embassy) and was sold outright to the Japanese for enough money that the new Embassy Building didn't cost the US tax payers a cent (at least that was the plan while we were there).  We had a  Detachment cook (Japanese) who had earlier worked for the Brittish."

"Our living quarters was something else.  When we first took over from the Army Diplomatic Corps, we were given a GS rating of 11 so we could stay in the Yeasu Hotel approximately one block behind the Mitsubushi Shoji building.  The Yeasu was a Field Grade Hotel (billets) that the Army managed to secure from the Japanese as reparations up to the time of the Peace Treaty was signed.  We were then moved as a group to the Yama No Wei  (Hilol Top Hotel) next to Meji University.  Later we were moved to the "Harris House" (next to Perry House), State Department housing.  Guess we have drove them nuts as they later moved us to, I believe,  the Grand Hotel Palace accross from the Budokan Hall just on the north side of the Imperial Grounds.  It was no palace but it was pretty good for thetime being.  I believe the Budakan Hall was the old Imperial Japanese Officers Hall of the WW II era.  Where the billets changed to after that is unknown"

"Upon our transfers out upon completion of our tour, I can only remember TSgt Mahoney went to 29 Palms, CA; SSgt Calassa was assigned to Marine Hqs in San Francisco, CA; Sgt Cavander was assigned to Quantico, VA."
