COMMENT by Terrell A. Ford: Most memorable moment was when the embassy was attacked on June 30 and they burned the flags and afterwards we went out and picked up what was left of the flags and when the article came out the next day I went and had the article and the flags framed to never forget my Marines and the personnel that was there.

Comments from Steven Maxwell 11SEP2010:  I had a great time during my tour in Kuwait. There were other watch stander's whom I can't recall at this time. I recently returned to Kuwait in 06' for some contract work and what a difference. They have a Beautiful new complex now, and I got to meet some of the watch stander's at their party.

Watchstanders:  Kevin L. Ryon,
From the son of MGySgt. Bonomo - 13JAN2011: My father, MSgt. Ralph J. Bonomo, was made the NCOIC of the MSG detachment at the American Embassy in Kuwait in March of 1971, and was accompanied by his wife, Anita R. Bonomo, and by me, his youngest child and son, Richard.  He was promoted to MGySgt while were in Kuwait.  He held the post until the last few day of 1972, at which time he was transferred to the post of NCOIC of the MSG detachment at the American Embassy in Vienna, Austria.   HIs successor was William (or Bill) English, who arrived with his wife and young son some time before we left.  We left Kuwait on New Year's Eve, spending New Year's Eve and a day or two thereafter in Beirut, Lebanon, at the request of the Company "B" commander, who wanted to see Dad before we completed the transfer to Company "A".

The 1972 Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Kuwait was supposed to be held at the Kuwait Hilton, across the street from the Embassy.  Ambassador Stoltzfus ordered it moved to the embassy compound out of some vague (to me) security concern of his and the PSO's.  As a consequence, the ball was suddenly, and at the last minute, moved poolside on the embassy compound.  Mrs. Bonomo suddenly found herself making a scarlett-and-gold cloth backdrop for the cake cutting ceremony.  All three of us along with some of the marines were suddenly making styrofoam floats, complete with globe-and-anchor, and candles.  Yours truly, aged 16, found myself in the frigid water attempting to tie the floats together and position them properly.  As my fingers became numb and inoperative, Cpl (or LCpl) Billy D. Ellison jumped in, fully clothed, to lend a hand.  The ball was quite a success despite the sudden change of venue.
