In 1979 the U.S. Government withdrew its official recognition of the Republic of China and acknowledged it considers the PRC to be the official government of China and Taiwan is part of the PRC.  The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) was founded in 1979 by a U.S. Government Official Harvey Feldman to serve the interests of the U.S. Government in Taiwan.  AIT Directors are considered, compensated and accorded diplomatic privileges at the same level as Ambassadors.

Regional Marine Officer (RMO):  Although the MSG Program was initiated in 1949, my research has not established when the first MSG Detachment was activated at the American Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan.

In 1949, Marine Security Guards began to be assigned to U.S. Diplomatic Missions worldwide.  The first MSG Detachments, consisting of six MSGs reported on-post at the American Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand and nine MSGs activated the American Embassy, Tangiers, Morocco MSG Detachment.

MSGs who successfully complete 24 months in the MSG Program are retroactively eligible for the MSG Ribbon (SECNAV Inst. 1650.1H dtd 22AUG06).

Chinese Communists, led by
Mao Tse-tung, drive Chiang Kai-shek and Nationalist forces from the mainland to the island of Taiwan.
The United States stops military aid to Taiwan.  U.S. and United Nations do not recognize P.R.C.

Regional Marine Officer (RMO)r:  The Marine Security Guard Program was not implemented until 1949.

In 1948, the Department of State (DOS) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) signed a Memorandum of Agreement whereby the Marine Corps would supply active duty Marine Corps personnel to protect classified materials, American lives and property in U.S. Diplomatic Missions worldwide.  These USMC personnel, to be designated as Marine Security Guards, would report directly to a DOS Foreign Service Officer at each mission.  Command structure was HQBn, HQMC / RMO Region 3.  A Regional Marine Officer (RMO) would be responsible for several posts within each of the then four designated RMO regions.
