MOS: OCCUPATION: MSGBN Commanding Officer USMC Bio: Colonel William E. Rizzio, Jr., is currently assigned as Commanding Officer, Marine Security Guard Battalion and Director, Marine Security Guard School. He assumed his present duties on August 30, 2003. Colonel Rizzio is a 1979 graduate of The Citadel and was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program the same year. He holds a Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence from the Defense Intelligence College and a Master of Arts in International Studies from Old Dominion University. After completing The Basic School at Quantico, VA, Colonel Rizzio attended the Imagery Intelligence Officers Course at Lowry AFB, CO. Designated an Intelligence Officer in May 1980, he was assigned to the Fleet Intelligence Center, Europe and Atlantic at Norfolk, VA, where he served as the Installations Analysis Branch Officer and Amphibious Support Branch Officer. In July 1982, he attended the Amphibious Intelligence Officers Course at Landing Force Training Command, Atlantic, Norfolk, VA. Upon graduation, he was assigned as the S-2 Officer for 9th Marines, 3d Marine Division at Camp Hansen, Okinawa. Upon returning from overseas in September 1983, he was ordered to the Landing Force Training Command, Atlantic, where he served as an Instructor and Course Director for the Amphibious Intelligence Officers Course. In November 1985, he was transferred to the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center at Dam Neck, VA, where he served as an Instructor and Course Director for the MAGTF Intelligence Officers Course until August 1987. After completing Career-level School at the Defense Intelligence College in June 1988, he reported to Camp Lejeune, NC, where he was assigned as the S-2 Officer for 2d Battalion, 8th Marines. In December 1989, following the return of BLT 2/8 from a Mediterranean deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, he was reassigned as the Intelligence Officer for II Marine Expeditionary Force Wargame Center. In November 1990, he was ordered to 2d Marine Division and deployed to Southwest Asia for Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM, where he served as the G-2 Collections Officer. In June 1991, he reported to Headquarters, U.S. Central Command at MacDill AFB, FL, for duty as the Chief, Iran Section within the Intelligence Directorate/J2. He transferred from that assignment in July 1994 and reported to 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, MCAS El Toro, CA, where he served as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff G-2; in July 1996, he assumed the duties as the Assistant Chief of Staff G-2. In September 1997, he was transferred to III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan, where he assumed command of 3d Intelligence Company; on 2 April 1999, he deactivated 3d Intelligence Company and activated 3d Intelligence Battalion. He relinquished command of 3d Intelligence Battalion in July 1999 and was ordered to Headquarters, U.S. Central Command for duty within the Joint Intelligence Center as the Chief, Production Branch and later as the Chief, Analysis and Production Branch. In March 2001, he was reassigned to the J2 Staff as the Chief, J2 Operations and Plans Division, where he supported Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. In August 2002, he reported for duty as the Assistant Chief of Staff G-2 for Marine Forces Pacific at Camp Smith, HI. From January to June 2003, he deployed to Bahrain for Operation IRAQI FREEDOM as the Assistant Chief of Staff G-2 for Marine Forces Central Command. Colonel Rizzio's personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards). |
