(The Can Tho Detachment was the last Marine Security Guard unit to escape the North Vietnamese onslaught.  Plans had been set for the detachment to be evacuated when the Saigon detachment was, but during the chaos, aircraft were not available to evacuate the Can Tho Detachement.  The evacuation plan had set four Air America helicopters and some old landing craft to be used for the evacuation.  However, due to circumstances arising from the unsuspected assault on Tan Son Nhut airport, the four helicopters were diverted to help evacuate personnel from the embassy in Saigon.  The Can Tho Detachment and the Consulate personnel along with 300 Vietnamese employees departed Can Tho on the landing craft going down the Mekong River to the Gulf of Tonkin.  They were ambushed once and managed to escape without any injuries.  Upon arriving at the mouth of the river they were supposed to meet a rescue ship, but it was not there.  They had a full load of fuel and a hand held compass and decided to head for the Phillippines.  At about 0200 hours on the 30th of April, they were spotted and picked up by the cargo ship Pioneer Contender.    After some shuffling around they ended up on the USS Blue Ridge along with the MSG's from Saigon.) (For now Colonel Steve Hasty's account of the event see - The Other Evacuation - www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/04/25/national/main188642.shtml)
